Our Story

1980

Community Baptist Church began on May 5, 1980 with a Bible Study led by Tommy Harrison.  As the congregation grew, the church was formally organized in November 1980.  Tommy Harrison was called as pastor, and served until March of 1981.

1981

Rodney Weatherly of Wheeler, Texas accepted the call to pastor in May 1981.  After continuing to grow, meeting in the Spanish Cove club house, the church voted to purchase 3 ½ acres where the church is located today.  Within six weeks, the church members paid off the $66,000 debt.  They then borrowed to construct the first building.  Pastor Weatherly served until 1987.

1987

In 1988, Bob Nix was called as pastor and served until 1992.

1992

Robert Williams became the interim pastor in 1992, as the church looked for a new pastor.

1994

On Friday afternoon April 15, 1994, a tornado came through the area and all the Community Baptist Church buildings were completely destroyed.  Praise God the buildings were empty at the time.  The church came together and decided to rebuild.  By much prayer and God’s provision, the Community Baptist Church buildings were a year later debt free!  (God allowed the old debt to be paid off and the new structure to be built without much debt.  Two years later the remaining debt was paid off.)

On October 3, 1994, Community called Robert Williams as pastor. He is married to Debbie, and they have 3 children, Katy, married to Dennis Robinson, Robby, and Annie.

They also have 5 beautiful grandchildren: Jonah, Peyton, Kylie, Piper, and Benjamin.

2022

After a battle with glioblastoma brain cancer and a bleak prognosis, Robert retired on January 01, 2022 to spend his remaining years enjoying and ministering to his family. He served faithfully for 28 years as pastor and left very large shoes to fill in his stead.

God has blessed us with some of the sweetest people on the planet. They serve and work hard for a Savior who never fails. We know firsthand that the church is not a building, but a community of people. People who are not perfect, but have been born again and love Jesus with all of their hearts. Jesus started Community in 1980 and Jesus will continue to use Community for His glory in the future.
